I've been working at this law firm for a year now.
There are close to a hundred coworkers in the firm, most of whom are my age, and I am 26 years old.
When I first joined the company, I had a friendly attitude, thinking that we should make peace with each other and do a good job with our colleagues, after all, we are all here to work.
But after spending time with them, I realized that I didn't like dealing with them very much. For one thing, I realized that they seemed to only like talking to people on their own team and rarely took the initiative to talk to me.
Sometimes I say hello and they respond, but the attitude always seems forced, as if we don't know each other very well and I'm putting up a hard fight.
In addition, when I ask my colleagues of the same age to help me with my work, they usually just say "I'm busy" or "I'm busy" without even a word of courtesy. When I help others, I at least say thank you and you're welcome.
This attitude makes me feel uncomfortable, when in fact helping each other in a law firm is a win-win situation, it's not like it costs them anything more.
To add to my confusion, I once said "thank you very much" to a female coworker and she didn't even respond.
I sometimes wonder if there's something wrong with my coworkers, or if I'm just being too polite myself? Maybe I shouldn't treat them as friends and just keep the relationship superficial?
To add, I probably didn't fit in with them because some lawyers in the previous generation worked together on cases and some worked alone, and in my generation, it's harder to deal with colleagues who work as a team. It's true that I don't fit into the group, but I don't think it's my problem.
