What is the Gestalt effect?

Do you know what the Gestalt effect is? And what does Gestalt psychology focus on?

Hi, I'm Spin from One Mind People Program 5, and I'm here to talk about the Gestalt Effect and Gestalt Psychology in a lighthearted way.

Gestalt theory, also known as completion theory, centers on the idea of emphasizing the "wholeness" of experience and behavior.

Let's say that when you see a bunch of dots arranged together, what you are actually perceiving is not individual dots, but a complete pattern of those dots combined. This branch of psychology focuses on human sensation and perception, so it is widely used in the field of design.

"Gestalt tells us.

"Gestalt" tells us that the parts come together to form a whole new meaning. For example, a black rectangular object, the size of the palm of your hand, with a screen, whose content changes when touched and which makes a sound - this is a cell phone. The meaning of a cell phone is no longer about the individual parts, but about the new meaning given to the whole, and the meaning of the whole is not equal to the simple addition of the parts.

With the evolution of the Gestalt theory, the "mind-body field" and "isomorphism" were derived.

What is the Gestalt effect?

"Mental field."--This refers to the interaction between the "I" and the "thing", resulting in new perceptions. This is because different people process the same thing differently, resulting in different perceptions. You can think of it as"A lover's eye can see things as they are."Take an exaggerated example. To give an exaggerated example, for example, ordinary people think that the dirty and smelly excrement, in the eyes of some enthusiasts, but is regarded as a symbol of intimacy, turned into a precious "golden holy water".

"Isomorphism."--Emphasizes that "context" and "things" interact to change our perceptions. The background provides a contrast, which makes our judgments contrasting. For example, black appears "especially black" against a bright white background, but may feel "a little white" against a darker background. To take an extreme example, a person who kills someone in revenge is seen as a crime in peacetime, but in times of war, it may be seen as an act of bravery.

By utilizing Gestalt Theory, we can gain more perspective when dealing with life's problems.

For example, at work, you feel like you're not contributing and your team is of low value, but the reality may be that your presence makes your coworkers feel more confident by comparison, which improves the overall efficiency of the team. On the other hand, if you are too good, your coworkers may feel inferior, which affects their motivation and lowers their performance. So, in the overall scheme of things, your "average" may be of significant value to the team.

Of course, this is not to encourage people not to work hard, but to remind not to easily deny themselves. Everyone has his or her own value, and as the saying goes, "existence is reasonable"!

It's the same in the family. An overly competent mom may make dad or the kids feel like a failure, even if dad is successful in the eyes of outsiders. It is crucial for mom to show the right amount of weakness to keep the family "balanced".

To summarize."An empirical phenomenon is called Gestalt if each part of it is interrelated with the other parts and the properties of each part derive from this relation."
